Question All the leaves fell off my Ficus. Is it dead?

How can I tell if it's still alive?

Don't panic.

Sometimes a ficus will drop all it's foliage if it's conditions change. Most times they will sprout new leaves in a few weeks, do not panic and overwater or overfeed to try and "save" it.

A simple test for life is scraping a small area on the trunk with your fingernail, if you see green under the top layer of bark, it is still alive. be patient.

Good Luck,

Will

I keep my figs in a very big, very bright south facing window, however there are some south windows that are actually too bright. Depending on your location, size of window, if you have screens installed, and many other factors, you may want to use a east or west window.

That being said, the best way to keep tropicals is under lights. A inexpensive 4 blub shop light works great if hung 4-6'' over your plants. If you only have one plant you can pick up very good looking adjustable light fixtures or lamps that will accept the new round floresant blubs. Use the regular white blubs and use as bright as you can get. If you hook these up to a timer set to 12 - 16 hours per day, all you'll have to worry about is the watering.

Remember to raotate your plants 1/4 turn weekly if you are using a window so that each side gets it's share of sun.
