Airlayering a Hemlock

Just wondering if anyone knew how long it takes to airlayer a hemlock (or if it is even possible)? Found a 6 foot tree with a great top, so it would be nice to save and get two trees.

Thanks for your help.

Chad,

Here in seattle we work with lots of hemlocks. (mountain, western, canadian) If it is an old collected tree, you can pretty much forget any layering. If it is a strong, young nusery tree, it might be possible, but it will take a while. I suggest using wire instead of ring cutting for hemlocks. A western hemlock will be easier than mountain, but they are both almost impossible in most peoples experience.

Thanks for the info - it is a young nursery tree (base of the trunk at about 2" maybe). I figure I'll give it a try. If I can keep it alive here in the (now) dry midwest.
Cheers
