air layering help

i have tried airlayering 5 different trees and have been unsucessful on all of them. I use sphagnum moss with and cover it with plastic. i left the moss in place for atleast 2 months and up to three and four months for the others and none of them worked.
i made sure the moss stayed moist, but still no success. two of the layers were on a maple and one was an oak. the other two were just ramdom trees in the woods at my house. any help would be grateful, thanks

You might start by reading some of the many articles on airlayering available on-line. Here are a couple:

http://www.evergreengardenworks.com/airlayer.htm

http://www.bonsai4me.com/AdvTech/ATLayering.html

After reading them, if you don't see any problem with your approach, perhaps you could repost describing in great detail how and when you tried your airlayers?

Mako, Are you sure you are cutting your layer band deep enough? When you pulled the sphagnum away did the cut look like it was calloused? This is usally the most common problem when people airlayer. Both articles Brian suggested are good, I would opt for Brents article at evergreen garden works myself.

I also learned recently about a good spaghnum moss. I used the long fibered moss that's cheap and easy to get, but this better moss is different. It's a golden color, and comes in (sort of ) clumps. It is harvested in South America, up in the mountains, and is closer to the Japanese type of sp. moss. If you look at the old Bonsai Today articles, you will see a very similar moss being used.

Why is it better? I'm not sure, but it doesn't seem to get as slimy as the regular sp. moss. It stays fluffy, if you get my drift. One airlayer that I did stayed too wet for a while, and the regular sp. moss got green and slimy, but this newer moss doesn't do that as readily.

You can find it in the garden centers at Lowes and some regular nurseries.
Armstrong has it. It's about the same price as the other sp. moss.
