Aging

Alright, ive been looking through some pictures of trees, and i noticed that some small trees look so old, but are still very tiny. How is this done? how can you keep a tree so small and have it look so old? I have a picture so you can get a better image of what im talking about.

Here again in bonsai you are attempting to acheive the illusion of age. Ods are the tree you pictured is not much over ten years old.

Trees like this are grown by allowing the seedling to grow to a point where the trunk is nice and thick. It is then carefully cut back, the branches re-grown and the roots carefully pruned. Once the root mass is dense and small enough it is placed in one of these little pots and there you have it. (The short version, actually there is a lot between the lines).

alright, i just thought there was a special technique for making these types of trees. I have a maple seedling planted in a small grow container, and i was looking to try this method.

-Could this type of tree also be made out of a cutting?

heres a picture of another cool tree-

The second picture you posted is also the product of continuous cut backs though the second tree is quite a bit older than the first, probably twenty years.

Trees like this can be made of cuttings but Maple cuttings are not quite so easy as one might think.
