Red Leaf african violet bonsai

is it possible to make an african violet bonsai? if so what kinds of care would it need and how would it survive root pruning?

also my current african violet has these brown spots on the place where the leaf and the stem connect. i am using standard potting soil in equal parts with bonsai grit as it's soil. it was resently trimmed as well with a sharp pair of kitchen sissers. please help!

A general rule concerning the origins of bonsai material, say that a woody shrub or tree is suitable starter stock. An African Violet doesn't fall into this catagory, and therefor is unsuitable.
However, it can be an accent plant (kusamono) in bonsai display.

My humble attempt... although it does sit next to my indoor tropical bonsais as sorta an accent plant.

That's a very sweet little plant, Pill Man, but it's kinda different than a tree.

African violets seem to need to be root pruned in a whole different way....actually, you cut the "neck" off entirely. It isn't woody, and it doesn't support the leaves after a while. It seems to sort of rot when it gets too long. Go look on the african violet websites, they tell you to literally cut the neck of the tree just under the leaves, cut off all of the leaves but about six, and then stick it into a pot that is a little too small. The tree grows new roots out of this stump.

But it's a darling plant and you probably will enjoy it until it outgrows it's neck...

(Reminds me of a Ray Stevens song, about a snake. Something about how the snake "wasn't too pretty, but Lord what a neck. Got more neck than Audrey Hepburn!"

That Ray Stevens, what a poet!

Joanie, who just chopped and repotted several African violets this year....
