Yes, please do! As someone who hopes to be building a shade structure within the next year, I would be interested in any and all ideas. Further, JasonG and I built a structure in his yard a few months back and used standard poly latice - which at our latitude and heat zone works much better (i.e. more dappled shade) than I thought it would...

Edit: A quick Amazon search turned up this, if it jogs your memory at all... http://www.amazon.com/Trellises-Arb...n/dp/0376037822

It was Southern Living Complete Deck Book, ISBN 0-376-09057-X and listed sunsetbooks.com as a source but I found several copies for sale by Googling just the ISBN number. It was a reprint form who knows when but looks more modern than the time period I thought.

Look for pages 150-152 for details.

Shade Cloth at Lowes/Home Depot?

I saw the postings about Shade Cloth at Lowes/Home Depot. I went to both and they looked at me like I had two heads? Where did you find it?

Thanks.

Tim,

seriously?70%?......I may have to rethink .I would have thought that would be too much, but your trees seem to love it.

Tim, your trees seem to be happy with it! This is the same type of cloth carried by our local Home Depot (about $77 for a roll of 50 x 7'). I even question the 75% more shade claim being it is light in color.

Rzeles, look for it in the same section where they have the weed block cloth. They are bigger rolls.

As it is now, my trees are getting day-long sun without a break and the summer is approaching fast with temps reaching 80-90 degrees F at midday.

What would be the best purchase?

Thanks in advance.

Jorge

try looking up Jaderloon.com they supply a standard poly cover white or (green- special order) at around 50 % shade also inquire about wiggle wire, its an easy sytem to put up and down, for a frame 4x4 wood posts and pvc pipe for top is inexpensive and easy.

bonsaifreak,

It's seems to be fine for my trees as I have very few large leaves. They did have it on a huge roll that was 6' wide and you bought the lenght you needed but changed to a precut roll that is 25'x6' and it costs more that way.

agraham,

The 70% really helps them in July and August. I thought at first it would be too much but glad I have it now. I have seen a big improvement with the hornbeams and maples. The tropicals really love it.

I think it works for me because the area is in full sun most of the day. They get 70% most of the day. I wouldn't use 70% if the area had shade for part of the day. That wouldn't be enough sun.

Thank you Allen and Tim for the replies. Well, I've finally decided to incorporate all suggestions into a single working plan. The wooden frame was completed yesterday. I have 3 separate areas to support a shade cloth. I've decided to place the Home Depot (75 cloth, same as Tim's has for his collection over two of them and a 50% cloth over the third one. That gives me the option of moving a tree as needed depending on the amount of light it requires. One additional concern I have is how much rain filters through the cloth. I would hate to deprive my trees from their beloved rain water...

If the cloth is slanted you lose rain water Jorge. If it is horizontal .almost if not all will come through the shade cloth.
