Adopted a Hinoki in need

Well, I was puttin around at one of the nurseries and came across a group of Hinokis stuck in the corner. 5 gal, really nice trunk and nebari, but needs some lovin as it's looking a little thin. I really like Hinokis and for $20, figured I couldn't go wrong.

The roots, bark, and existing foliage look fine, it's just a little browned and thin. I took out the dead stuff, but now just wondering if anyone has any tips on rehabilitating this poor little guy?

I've got him in early morning sun, filtered/shade for the rest of the day.

Thanks!

PS- I know you're gonna ask for some pics, so I'll post some tonite.

Mike I can't see the photo's( firewall at work won't let me go to photobucket) but from your description you may have problems with this for bonsai. Hinoki's are well known for not budding back once the inner foliage dies off, so save any foliage close to the trunk and branches-if any- so you can grow out some help for design, or shoot for a big tree.

Hmmm, well, if that's the case, at least it's a CHEAP lesson

I don't know if this helps, but I attached the pics instead of embedding them.

Thanks!

Mike I am thinking plant it and see if it recovers, but I don't think from what I see, that this will be able to be a good bonsai. Perhaps a practice tree, Hinoki's can make a beautiful bonsai, but they are a lot of work, learn on this one.

Mike as long as you can look at it in that vein you will be in good shape.

An investment in you landscaping never hurts your property values.

Mike:
If you have a shaded area, you could try placing tree and pot in a large plastic bag (so that no branch touches the plastic. Use wire hangers to construct a frame for the bag.

Water well and place the tree in it. You are creating a mini green house. Once a day remove the bag or open a side to allow fresh air in. Then close it up for the next 24 hours.... I call this my ICU method...

Good luck, if you try it...
