Acer rubrum "October Glory" Maple for $10 at Lowe's

All,

Just went to Lowe's today to look for some pre-bonsai material. Since I am interested in the deciduous, I went looking. Turns out Lowe's is having a 50% off sale on all trees and shrubs. Bought a Acer rubrum "October Glory" Maple for $10. The tree was about 12' tall about a 3 or 4" trunk. I will try the chop in the spring. For $10, you can't go wrong.

Hi Ron,

Before you do any work to it see if they will let you exchange it for something else..like say a Japanese Holly or maybe a Juniper?

Hi MIdwest,

Why would I say this?Well, they are finer plants for making a bonsai with.Something to do more with crazy long nodes rather than foliage size really(no ram),just going by my personal expirence with these maples though.I dont like the sugar or silver either for bonsai.

The leaves might reduce, but the distance between them doesn't. That means very lanky, loose growth that generally sags and looks weird. Larger, trunk diameter above 4 or 5 inches and taller--30-40 inches bonsai can work with this species. Collected trees are always superior in character to what you run into in big nurseries.

Hi, I was a bit rough in my first comment. October Glory is a growth and colot selected variety. The internosed will always (even when starved) stay in 3-9" range. They are beautiful trees, just extremely difficult to bring into scale. John

OK Sounds like this was not such a great deal afterall.

Perhaps I'll just plant it in the yard for some future shade (or firewood).
