If you get a good low graft or non-graft, they make pretty decent bonsai.

Lose it. They make marginal bonsai. After working on some for several years, I came to the conclusion better material is out there that's only half the trouble. They tend to be leggy and leaves reduce only marginally. If you get them from big box nurseries, the roots are usually a mess. All this takes effort to bring under control, effort that would be more efficiently used on another more bonsai-friendly cultivar of Japanese maple.

They are very cheap and available just about everywhere though. They can make good practice trees.

I second everything said.

If you find a tree on the specimen way why not, but startinf from nursery stock can be a long détour. Some cultivar are way better to work with.
