Acer Leaf loss

Having been given a bonsai in June that has lived happily in my office for the last 5 months, the leaves have now withered and died looking as though they have dried up. I have tried to keep the tree (an Acer) correctly watered and fed. So, do I have a wintering tree or a stcik in the ground and how do i tell?

Re: Acer Leaf loss

Your tree is definitely dormant. We can't guess the cause but we can see how permanent the condition is. Usually, as the leaves dry, they will fall. If they remain firmly attached to the tree after going brown, even if you brush them, it's a cause for concern. One exception, Beech (Fagus spp.) will retain their leaves throughout the winter and drop them in the spring as new growth pushes them off.

Using a fingernail, scratch the bark of the tree. Be careful to support the limb you're scratching. If you see green, the tree is probably okay. Take it home and put it outside.

Deciduous trees really can't survive an office environment year round. Usually a week or two at most, if the light is very good, is about the best you can expect. Some tropical and semitropical bonsai can be grown indoors year round with attention to their needs, which usually means some additional light.

Regards,

Matt
