1st Post: Ideas for a Serissa Bonsai

Hey everyone

I'm new to bonsais, i just started 2 months ago. I have a juniper that I purchased, but i bought a serissa seedling to start my own! I'm excited, but not exactly sure what style to use. I'd really like to try a broom style, however, I read one site saying that this species isnt good for that style. Anyone have any suggestions?

Skattman, Welcome! If your trees are still small, it might be good to consider growing them out for a while first before choosing a form. They need to thicken up and grow out before you can really do much with them. Once they are in bonsai pots, or you start to train and prune them, you will slow them down.

Take a while to read information on this forum, and learn how to care for, water, and grow your trees. The investment is well worth it! Time is the "fourth dimension" in bonsai, and you have years of it to decide how to style your trees.

Also, if you bought a juniper that already is in a bonsai pot (you didn't say) if it has rocks glued on it, pry them off!

Search "juniper" on this forum and on the internet for care. Also search "serissa".

(I love serissas, they are fussy but pretty tough when you learn their likes and dislikes)

The juniper is 4 years old and came with fake cotton(?) moss around the tree, and then small stones for the last little bit of the soil covering. About 2 weeks ago I dug up some very nice short moss and replaced the fake stuff. Personally, I think it looks good...I'm just waiting on the moss to take and get a good covering (its in plastic wrap to create a moist environment for it). Its been so enjoyable that i decided to start another one! so well see where it goes from here.
