A 10-10-10 + Superthrive
Recently, I started using a 10-10-10 fertilizer + the recommended dose of Superthrive on my trees. Any ideas on whether this is helpful or harmful to my beloved trees? Apparently on junipers (one of which I have) coffee grounds are the big thing.

Trav, don't know about the other stuff, but Super Thrive won't hurt anything. I have used it on everything I have for many, many years. Some will argue that it doesn't help either, but I believe it does. I buy it by the gallon.

I would say that it all depends on what kind of trees you have. If you have junipers, I have read that they do not do so well on balanced ferts and prefer to be fed higher nitrogen fert. I am feeding mine fish emulsion, seaweed extract, coffee grounds and a 4-6-6 granular of organic fert. If you want to use the 10-10-10 as your basic fert you may be ok if you add a high nitrogen fert to the soil like the coffee grounds.

BonsaiBen, how do you apply all these feeds to your Junipers? by this i mean do your trees get all of those feeds you mentioned at one go? or spaced over time? i have a squamata and the foilage is looking weak in colour, i have been feeding it a basic feed, do i need to improve the feeding pattern?
thanks

Adam, I added the granular stuff (made by a company called Espoma) to the soil when i repotted in April and sprinkled a little bit more over the soil in May. Then I added the coffee to the top of the soil the other day. I use the fish emulsion and the seaweed extract for alternating waterings.
Keep in mind that I am feeding it aggressively because it is prebonsai and I am trying to get it to grow. If your juniper is looking weak in color, I think it could be due to an array of factors, one of which could be how you are feeding it. When you say that you are feeding it a basic feed, I assume you mean not a high niotrogen feed? Maybe you should see if you can get an iron fertilizer that is high in nitrogen and see if that fixes the foliage. Also, just to make it clear, I am no expert--just a relative beginner who does a lot of reading on trees and have been seeing some good results so far. |

Exactly, sounds like you are missing some iron. My ex-farmer neighbour saw my pet grape vine looking a little sad (and yellow) and immediately recommended a dose of "Sequestered Iron". Could do the trick... UK online Sequestered iron distributor here... Jerry Amsterdam (Yes, we can grow grape vines outside here...)

Thanks for all the suggestions. I didn't know that conifers preferred high nitrogen soil, but now I do. Isn't it a rule of thumb to wait approx. 2 weeks or so before fertilizing a newly repotted tree?
