Yellow leaves on several trees
I have several trees that I have gotten from a local bonsai nursery as starters.Fukien Tea Serissa (Pink Moountain) Eugenia Jade New Zealand Tea Rose Ficus "Kiki" Ficus "Too Little" Dwarf Myrtle Barbados Cherry Bouganvilla All are tropicals and sub-tropicals. What are the common causes of yellow leaves? Some of the trees have a few yellow leaves every few days, but they are all growing new foiliage and shoots. They have sufficient light, and I am watering them the best I have learned to so far. They all get watered about every 1-2 days from the top and very gently. This is based on the recommendation of the owner of the boansai nursery and they have been in business there for 40 years as a nursery. Any suggestions? Should I be worried about the yellow leaves? Re: Yellow leaves on several trees
It seems that many trees have a means of self defoliating as a reaction to stress or over watering or being to dry. Almost anything will cause some trees to drop leaves. I would look first at watering. Then room tempprature and temprature fluxuiations. Check moisture in the soil with your finger and by watching your foliage, if the leaves start to droop the tree wants water. Esp if the surace soil is dry. Right now elms are droping leaves outside because of colder tempratures.
If your trees are outside I would say that the yellowing is because of temprature. All of this is supposition as I can not see your trees. This is something like a doctor trying to do a diagnoses with a blindfold on, all you can realy do is guess.

Re: Yellow leaves on several trees
Thanks for the information!
All of my trees are inside tropicals. The one that seems to have the most yellow leaves is the Serissa "Pink Mountain". The soil that I am using drains very fast and is the bonsai soil that is put together by the nursery where I got the trees. The other treet that is getting the most yellow leaves is my Fukien Tea "Carmona". It is getting about 1-2 yellow leaves every couple of days. The Serissa is getting about 2-4 everyday. Both trees are getting new buds and growth. I live near Denver, and they get indirect south facing light most of the day and I have a grow light over the plants about 4 hours a day at about 24-36 inches. Room temp does not vary below 67 F and never higher than about 70 F. Jess |

Re: Yellow leaves on several trees
I don't grow trees inside so take this with a grain of salt. To me it sounds like they aren't getting enough light. The light from the window is greatly lessened this time of year and your grow light it too far away to do much good. I would move it as close to the trees as possible without burning the foliage, probably 8-10 inches, and give it 12-16 hours per day.

Re: Yellow leaves on several trees
Jess....What has already been said seems right to me. I have several indoor/tropical trees, I must also say that I am a novice. I have experienced the yellow leaf thing and find that it usually is over-watering. The other things mentioned are also possible but check your watering first. As for the Serrissa.... I have em. They will drop their leaves as soon as look at you. Change there position...leaves drop... bring em inside for the cold weather, leaves drop. Over water, under water leaves drop. You get the picture! If new ones are forming you should be OK.

Re: Yellow leaves on several trees
[color=Green:0cdada3edd][/color:0cdada3edd]JUst an update.
Looks like most of the trees that had yellowing leaves had spider mites. I thought that I had gotten rid of most of them. One of my trees that I purchased (Fukien Tea) had them. Well, the mites got into the baby tears that I was using for ground cover on some of the trees and I did not see it. I have since removed all of the baby tears and sprayed the trees again. We will see in the next few days how they are going to do. Jess |
