Xmas Malsai

Hi Guys. Need some help. A friend of mine bought me a Chines Elm (at least that is what it is pretending to be - in other words a stick with twigs on), already in a very nice pot in the shape of a Chinese guy curling around the base of the tree. All very nice. BUT, the trunk of the tree is about 1.5 cm thick and the opening for the pot is 2 cm wide. It desperately needs repotting and I don't want to kill it, but I don't want to smash the pot and upset my friend - any ideas? Thanks

James

Re: Xmas Malsai

Ask your friend which one he values more and then act accordingly:

If it's "save the pot," then try the following:

Under lots of running water, begin loosening the soil at the base of the tree with a chopstick or thick piece of wire. _More water and more jiggling should get the soil loose enough that it begins to flush out of the roots. _Work on all sides of the tree, inverting it occasionally and shaking to get the soil out.

Eventually you will remove enough soil that the root ball can be coaxed to collapse somewhat, and you may be able to trim the stubbornest roots to get the tree out. _May take some plunging up & down as if the tree were a plumber's helper

Choice #2 "Save the tree!" _Take a hammer and rap the side of the pot smartly

Repot the tree in a suitable container

Regards,

Matt

Re: Xmas Malsai

Here's a pic of one of our club guys rapping with the right end of the hammer, al He is choked up pretty high for maximam rappage, though. This was demonstrating how to use some lead shot to secure wires in small crevices in a rock planting, May 1999. The "sparks" I added for effect. Isn't it hard to read this text with all that movement going on below? You are now in a trance...
