X" trunk = diameter or circumference?
In general (in bonsai), when someone says X" trunk, do they mean the diameter or the circumference? I thought it would be the diameter, but someone selling a tree with 10/16" diameter trunk called it a 2" trunk.
Also when selling a tree, is the trunk measured at root level or just below the first branch? |

Unless someone is trying to make a quick buck or doing something shallow, we generally mention trunk sizes in relation to their diameter.
As for where to measure, I always thought it was above the swelling of the nebari.

Ok thanks for the info, he corrected his ad with the word 'circumference'.
When I first saw it I was, wow 2", then a photo he had showed 10/16"... disappointed. |

LOL that's right. You and I and everyone who cares about bonsai mentions trunk diameter. But on eBay they know that and almost invariably quote circumference. Caveat emptor!
