Wiring Juniper
When I wire the Juniper I got, and make the first slight bend, about how long should I wait for the next bend?
Thanks for any advice anyone can give me |

With wire, you typically don't bend a little and wait then bend some more, if that's what you're asking.
The tree will need to be unwired and rewired. Usually wire is left on until the tree takes a set, which can vary depending on the material and age of the tree, from 8 months or so on a young maple to several years on a cedar. Sometimes the wire begins to bite into the trunk before the "set" occurs and the trunk or branch will need to be rewired. The exception is the adjustable turnbuckle. You can find a tutorial on Turnbuckles in the ***FAQ*** under wiring. Regards, Matt

Well, I have a Juniper thats about 3-4 yrs old. So your telling me that I will wire it, then take it off then wire it again? How long does the first wiring take until I take it off to rewire?

I still am not sure I am following your question. Wiring several bends into a branch is usually done at the same time, and not a succession of "slight bends" carried out over time. As new branches grow, they may be wired in turn and if the tree is redesigned, parts that had previously been wired my be rewired to achieve a different effect.
Getting those bends to become permanent will takes as long as it takes. I don't know what kind of trunk thickness you have or how radical the restyling might be. In any case, you would need to remove the wire within a year or so (whether or not it achieves the desired affect for the reasons stated above). You won't know if the branches have set until you remove the wire. Maybe you should rephrase the question of provide more information. We could go around like this quite a few times without getting to your point. Regards, Matt

Well, the tree has 3 primary branches, the Largest of the 3 goes straight out and is about 3-4, maybe 5 inches out. I want to bend the main one is a wave that has 1 crest on it. The two other one I want to bend out. These two bend at an upwards slant(they grow opposite each other)

There's no substitute for practice. Start out on a branch you intend to cut off anyway. It can be similar material on a garden tree, even.

Hi aag, that is how most junipers will grow if left on their own. Unless it's a horizontal grower it will want to grow upwards. This is good and bad when it comes to bonsai training. Good for fast growth of the apex but you have to be careful. If you let the top grow without any pruning, the tree will start killing off the lower branches as it grows taller. If you want to keep those lower branches alive, a certain amount of top pruning is necessary to drive the energy into the lower branches. Depending on the stage of development, this may not be a problem at this time but I thought I would mention it so you would know what's going on. Tony Last edited by Tony : 10-Sep-2002 at 03:30 AM. |

I still don't fully understand. This is a picture of the bonsai. I read a book with a chapter on wiring, it tells me how, but no details. Could you explain it to me a little better. Is possible, explain it to me as if I was a little kid. |

On your next upload Boniface, click the browse button and select the file to upload it as an attachment. You can't use the IMG tag to link to a file on your hard drive. It must be uploaded as an attachment.
