Wire Marks..suggestiosn pls

Hey all,

Good news and bad...

My Seiju Elm is growing like wildfire and it seems very healthy. Problem is, I wired it about 4 weeks ago to help move some branches a bit and already the wire has dug in!!! Well, I removed the wire without damaging the tree but was curious how this type of damage heals. Easily? Readily? Any thoughts would help.

As a novice I have learned a valuable lesson: Always inspect the wires...REGULARLY

Robert

The damage from wire scars never really heals, as the scars are the result of a callusing process. They may become less noticeable in time. On some smooth-barked trees like maple, they just tend to get worse.

There are some options to try and help heal them, like sandpapering the branch or removing a bit of wood to soften the profile if it is really bad, but without seeing what you are talking about it's difficult to suggest anything in particular.

Regards,

Matt.

Matt,

Thanks for the response....The folowing is a pic of the damage, I am also going to follow this with a pic of the whole tree. It may be best to cut this leader off and try and pull up a new one...Thoughts?

Robert

Ah well....

You did the right thing in wiring the opposite direction. Let it bite in a bit in that direction and it will take some of the goofus out of it. We've all been there.

Live and learn.

Regards,

Matt.

I Read a bonsai book a while back and it had an example of a tree that had been wired and damaged, the photo of the tree appeared to have been taken some years later after the scars had grown over and it gave the tree a natural gnarly look which actually improved the tree. But far be it from me to suggest we all start wire scarring our trees.

I belong to the marin bonsai club and a fellow member did the same thing our instructer said to take a razor blad dip it in cleaning acholhol and make slits in the bark crossing the scar. I'm just a beginner, but I got this information from an enpert.... In other words you should pm "treebay" about this before you do it

I forgot to say one thing: how it works...
our instuctor said how it works is the slits (made by the razor) heal over and if there very close will also heal the scar

This suggestion follows the thread we had on wounding the bark to cause it to thicken, and the idea of wiring in the opposite direction to help break up the obvious visual rhythm of the diagonal scar. If the scar is mostly a depression, it can help quite a bit to disguise it.

More often the wire scar is a result of the callus of tissue that builds up surrounding the embedded wire. You can see examples of that in the wire scar thread.

In that case the razor isn't quite going to "cut it," so to speak, but it isn't going to hurt, either!

Regards,

Matt
