winterize my juniper?
hello all, love the new location, and thanks for the invatation. My question is, do I need to do anything special with my juniper before winter sets in? also is there or where can I find a indoor growing tank of some type, would this be helpful in protecting my bonsai in the winter. Well thanks again for the info. J.Lively

Re: winterize my juniper?
Fertilaze with 0-10-10, an keep under a ledge or large tree. Your in Colorado, and it gets pretty cold there, I would check with the locales on how to winterize for sure. I would hate to see you lose a tree on my account. It just does not get that cold here, and I don't have the experiance to be sure. It's good to see your name again. Bonsaial

J.LIVELY:
Good to see that you found us again. Protect your pot and roots from freezing with mulch or straw, after it snows pile snow on top of the mulch or straw. Put a fraim of some sort around the top of your trees to protect them from the wind. In Japan you will see them put there bonsai under there benches and then wall them off with bamboo fencing, air can get in and out but winds get broken up. Under the snow is moisture but no sub zero tempratures. Now having said all of that I also must say that I am in central california and have never had to use any of these techniques. So listen to Als advice and find a local who has had success in your environment.

Re: winterize my juniper?
I was wondeirng that myself, as I'm in Toronto Canada. It can get to -30 here on a bad day. Think I can just wrap it up in burlap (after putting mulch or straw on the soil) and let it be til spring?

Re: winterize my juniper?
Porcy: Its not the temprature under the snow that is the problem, Generally if it snows hard enough to cover your trees completly you will be ok! Its the temprature above the snow that will kill an unprotected plant. If you pile straw or mulch around and over your pots so that they will not freeze and then let snow cover the tops of your trees. In japan they will put there trees under there benches cover the pots with straw and then wall them off with snow for the winter. Remember servival 101 if you are caught out and unprotected dig a snow cave and seal yourself up. The temprature will not fall below 32degrees. The same temprature as the snow around you.
