Wintering a Juniper
Have a Juniper I have outside all spring & summer. I live in central Michigan. Do I need to bring the tree indoors? If the roots freeze outside will it damage the tree? Any valid information would be much appreciated.
Thank you. MCM |

Re: Wintering a Juniper
I live in northwest Indiana so our weather is somewhat similar. What works for me is moving my large display stand
into my garage. I tent the stand (its an A frame shape) in heavy duty plastic. Inside go all my trees and a thermestaticly controlled lightbulb (150w for the volume of space in my case). This has worked for me for as I have never lost a tree to winter. What ever you do don't bring your tree into the house for that would surely kill it. Hope this helps. MJD |

Joboo: This is ripsgreentree in central california. How long have you been using this system and how difficult was it to set up. It would also be good if you could give our northern friends an idea of how much this system cost you.

Re: Wintering a Juniper
Joboo...This is Jay, I have interest in your system. What kind of thermostat is it? How much heat does it provide? I am trying something different to moderate the temp. I have some copper pipe under my Bonsai shelf. The copper pipe is filled with liquid and has an electric thermostatic controlled heat tape on it, do not know how much heat it will produce. I will keep you all posted on this. I live in zone 5/6 NY.

Re: Wintering a Juniper
ripsgreentree, jay and group: I have used this method to winter my trees for about 10 years. The plastic sheet I use is just the painter's plastic dropcloth that can be bought at Menards or the like fairly cheap. The thermastat is a standard furnace model I had on hand. A new one might cost a bit. Being an electrician I knew how to wire it in with a light fixture. ( let someone who knows how do if you don't) Its the heat of the bulb that warms the enclosure. I keep the thermastat set at 34F. THe light offers only heat not as a light source for growth. All told if one had to guess I spent maybe 20 dollars.
