White Roots?!

My bonsai seems to getting healthier (one branch is brown and a few needles are copper color, but is MUCH better) but I noticed something a few days ago.

It has been getting warmer and warmer lately, and I noticed that some roots are white. They aren't part of the root ball, they are just sticking out - could they be dead roots or even new roots?

Also, should I do anything about them - or just let them stick out like that?

Re: White Roots?!

Shambhala, it's the black and dark brown soft roots that are bad. White is a good thing. But they shouldn't be sticking out of the pot. Sounds like it may be time to pull the plant out of the pot and check it out for repotting. Do this carefully since it sounds like the plant it just recovering from something else.

Re: White Roots?!

Hey!

Here's what I would do (and have done)

I agree with the last post that it sounds like it's time to repot. But a tree in recovery is a VERY delicate thing. I would not do a complete repot (read: removing all of the dirt, etc)

I would carefully tip the entire pot, and pull the entire root ball out, dirt and all. Then place into a larger pot or grow box, and pack new dirt around the root ball, and add and inch or two to the top of the soil.

From the tree's perspective, not much has happened, except now when it sends out its new feeder roots (the white ones), they will find new soil to feed in, rather than air pruning!

Then leave the tree to grow and recover for a full season, and give it a little extra care. Trust me, it'll know.

Just a thought...
