Mother nature waters when she likes, and she uses cold water too.
So don't get too critical as to time of day. I've been watering any time my trees need it, but always in the morning to start them off in the hottest days here in Michigan.

Typically I water in the early morning. In summer I have to be sure they are watered by 11:00 or the maple leaves will get crispy fast (98-105). Sometimes certain trees need a second watering in the evening during summer. I add more organic material to my soil than some people to help the soil hold moisture. I have to be careful in cooler seasons to avoid over watering because of the organics.

Not disagreeing, but the temp difference of the roots in a pot vs. the ground would be appreciable, so I think shock factor would be greater, not that I'm an expert on that at all. Mother earth also holds what ever water she has, and it is always available without one of use tree hearders on the end of a can or hose. So I guess it's more of a pot culture concern.

I usually water in the morning, but sometimes it is midday before I actually get out there... doesn't seem to matter. And occasionally in the evening, if the day was hot and dry, and the trees need to be hit again.

My wife will water during the morning, then I will water in the evening when I get back from work, except weekends when it is hot then I will tend to sprinkle water all over the place several times during the day (keeps the kids happy)

I water when they need it, allowing them to dry down sufficiently between waterings.
It's been hard to figure out a system that works well. My current system is a 4 zone automated timer with misting heads placed for proper root zone coverage. I have taken in to consideration proper soil for optimum drainage. The soil mix now nearly dries out before the system turns on again. It's hot here in Florida so in the evenings I look closely to see if they need to be watered again. As of a week ago they did so at that point I added a third on period. Currently my system comes on at 9:15, 1:15 and 5:15. It only needs to run for about 15 minutes to saturate the soil well allowing water to drain thru the bottom of the pots. It's a 4 zone because some of my trees need to be watered more often than the rest so I have one zone on those trees that come on for a slightly longer duration. They are in a location that is not with the other trees, just on the end of a bench. I always pay attention as the year progresses and make adjustments in the duration and start time. I need to do this roughly 4 times a year. Watering was a tough thing to figure out but now I have time to do other things with my trees and not hand water morning and evening and some afternoons too. Great question and at a great time of the year to ask.

Roots in the ground stay cooler than in a pot for sure. But water does not flow any slower in the earth than in a pot depending of course on the type of soil. Gravity is the same in the pot as it is in the earth. Watering times are not dependent on pot temp but more the needs of the tree. My trees do not spend enough time in the direct sun to get the pots overheated. Hector

Chris, when I was still in living in Pfaffenthal, the trees were happy with one serving of water per day in the hottest conditions. My ficus was growing air roots by itself. After all, Luxembourg is known to be agreeably moist ![]() Now that I moved, I need to water them a lot more. Michael |
