What makes an olive an olive?

I know it sounds silly, but that's my question. Why do we call the black olive an olive when it's not/ Or is it? I know there are various kinds of true olives (read the trees that make olives we use for eating or oil). But why do we call other trees olive as well? Thanks, y'all.

Why do we call liquidamber a Sweet Gum tree when it is not a gum tree? Why do we call a junipers cypress and red cedars cedars when junipers aren't cypress and red cedars aren't cedars, but juinpers?

It's a colloquial thing. Species are known locally by many different names that sometimes get caught up in everday, more widespread usage. That's why using the Latin name to ID trees is so critical.
