Warning: Stay away from these trees

As someone who is just learning about bonsai, I would find it very helpful to have a list of trees and shrubs that do not lend themselves to bonsai. I know that there are always zone limitiations but I'm talking about all-around losers! If there is a tree that would be better to stay away from, I'd like to know now rather than later.

Thanks,
Barry

Thanks, Pootsie for sharing your thoughts. However, I was thinking of North American trees and shrubs that don't reduce well or are too brittle or .....

Barry, I suspect you'll find most of what you were looking for in this previous thread.

BonsaiBarry,

I would get with the local bonsai society in your area of Santa Maria, CA. They would know for sure through previous trial and error about trees in your zone. Hopefully this will save you much frustration, and money. Shohin manzanita is extremely hard. I only know three in the U.S. who can successfully meet all of it's needs. Stick to material that will be happy in your zone. Good luck!

I disagree about Serissas

They may react to any changes they dont like by dropping leaves etc, but in most cases they show remarkable flexibility and provide new growth as soon as they settle down.

I have 2 old Serissas and many young ones and I feel they are very tolerant to my mistakes.

For Serissas, I would put it this way, they are more 'interactive' than other species, they 'talk' to you more, they express their feelings in a more vibrant way, that's all.

Having said that, you have to take the conditions you live in into consideration.
In Greece (zone 10) Serissas do just fine, whereas Red maples are pretty much impossible to grow.

regards
Dimitris
