Use Of Cat Litter In Bonsai Soil

-Can untreated, unsented cat litter be used as a substitute in some bonsai soils?

cat litter does not drain like bonsai soil does, it clumps up when wet. Great for cats, not a good thing for trees. from one newbie to another, welcome to this site. The people here are great. (By the way, cat litter was my first idea in bonsai too.)
Weclome again,
Tom

You'll want to use Turface for soil as opposed to K-litter.

I agree, turface is a superior product, but cat litter isnt a bad idea. You have to use the right type/brand but there are some good ones out there. Obviously clumping kindas are bad. We have a thread about this going at BonsaiSite. Theres even pictures of the litter and bag in the thread. And the guy who is using cat litter, isnt some noob without a clue. Anyways Check it out.

There is no standard for Kitty litter, so what's available to Harry Harrington could be completely different than what you find in your Johnny Cat bag, for example, and there is no guarantee they won't change the recipe tomorrow because "four out of five cats like it better" or it's more "flushable" or some criteria that doesn't necessarily apply favorably to growers.

Products like Turface is designed for gardeners. Kitty litter is designed to absorb animal waste.

Regards,

Matt

Ahh.. Turface being used in my soil mix adds such a high level of absoprption as well as superior drainage that I can't believe I cooked up the blend myself. I'd be glad to send you a sample.

Mr. frzz,

Check out the Turface thread in the soils section. I just posted some Walmart info.
