Unhappy Unhappy Acer Palmatum

Hi,
I am a bit of a novice when it comes to Bonsai care I was given an 85 year old acer palmatum last year and to my knowledge I have looked after it but no new growth has come about from the now bleak looking tree. The ends of the shoots that I pruned last year are looking very dry and dead but the main trunk still resembles a healthy specimin. I am very worried as it was a very special and rather expensive present. Is there any way to check if it is still alive and is it normal for it to look that way at this time of year in England?
I would be very greatful if anyone can help me.

Could you post pictures? People might be able to get a better idea what is happening if they can see what your talking about. Some close ups would help. Is the dying back just at the pruning site? Is it leafed out? Hard to help without more info?

Hi there,
This question is best answered by one of our UK mmbers who is famiiar with your area but to help them help you...could you go to your 'user CP' section and fill it out..that wy we will know were you are etc...

Also let us know how you ovrwintered the tree. Did it stay in the house? not a good thing, or was it overwintered outdoors in a greenhouse cold frame etc... a picture would greatly help but the info is also very important. There is no such thing as too much info. Remember we are not there so give us as much as you can ..

To check for life, you can scratch the bark (just a tiny amount!) and see if there is any green underneath. I would check the main trunk first, since that is the biggest concern. As long as the trunk lives, it can regrow branches. If there is no green under the bark, then I am afraid that your tree is probably dead.

Regards,
John

Hi Jona,

By now you Acer Palmatum should have come into leaf. My Kiyohime broke bud in February as is common for the variety, and was followed two to three weeks later by my Sango Kaku and other Japanese maples. This at the moment, does not bode too well, as the weather here has been warm enough for a few months now for your tree to have broken dormancy.

As others have suggested, take your finger nail and scratch away at the bark on the trunk, near to the base, and see if the cambium layer beneath it is still green. If it is, thats a positive sign, if not... you have a dead tree.

Can I ask where you kept the tree during the winter time? Was it given any form of shelter or protection from frost? Was the soil left to dry out? Also, what is the soil like? Does it drain quickly? Do you know when it was last repotted?

If you can provide some more info and also a picture, particularly a close up of the base and any exposed roots and the branches. It could be that the tree has "over slept", but for my mind I think the tree has probably suffered root damage in some form or another, most likely as a result of the cold.

Try the bark scratch test first, then let us know what you find.

Fingers crossed for you!!

All the best,

Aaron

NB if you have any problems posting pictures, just PM me and I'll give you my email address and I will do it for you.
