Elm in rock hard soil
This little guy is rootboud in a big way.Soil is like rock.
It was kept outdoors at the nursery so I guess it will be an outdoor tree. I plan to keep it tiny and maybe try a mame.Should I wait till early spring to repot? I've read that you can put the existing rootball into a larger pot without disturbing the roots. Just sort of plug the thing into new soil as is. I know ulmus is pretty tough but I'm spooked about messing with the roots as temps are dropping pretty low here. Standard winterizing? Bury the pot and mulch around it? Thanks. Dean

Ok...I guess what I was looking for is called "slip pot"...
Take the entire rootball and bury it in new soil in a bigger pot...Take a chopstick and gently bore a few holes in the top of the hard soil trying not to damage the roots. Hopefully the rootball will soften (not sure how) and expand (while in dormancy?). Oh well,I'll give it a try and see what happens.

It's a hard call, Dean, because you need that rootball to absorb water. Do your best, and let us know if you have any more questions.
I would also be tempted to soak the rootball in water when repotting, to make sure it wets all the way through. Wait until you see all of the bubbles stop. At least that way you don't have a dry center. Just an opinion, take it with a grain of salt as always! Good luck! Joanie |
