Two Questions :)
I have a lot of questions right now, wondering if you guys can answer some or give me some good websites/books to check out
![]() 1. I (being a fool) picked off many of the dead flowers from my quince. I noticed a few weeks ago that where the flowers I didn't pick are, many have a quince 'pear' growing behind them. How exactly does the fruit grow, and why is it behind the flower?! 2. Does it require energy for a plant to open flowers? IE: My Spiraea was just repotted and the buds opened and are in full bloom, I am wondering if that is a sign of good health... would they rot otherwise? Thanks, I have been thinking about these ones for a bit... I should start reading up on the biology of plants, pretty amazing stuff when you think about it ![]() |

Re: Two Questions :)
There are lots of books and websites you could check out. A couple good books that I like are The Bonsai Work Shop by Herb L. Gustafson, and Bonsai A Care Manual by Colin Lewis.

Re: Two Questions :)
Shambhala: both fruit and flowers require energy from a tree. When I have a tree that I am nursing like after repotting or root pruning, I will not allow it to flower or carry fruit as it will drain energy from the tree. I would allow the tree to recover for a season and let it flower and fruit when it has suffencent roots and energy to support flowers and or fruit. Just something to think about. I have seen an azalia flower itself to death after being repotted.........ripsgreentree

Thanks, that's exactly what I needed to know *I thought plants would shut off making flowers or fruit until they were healthy enough, not just continue to waste what little amount of energy they have. Eek so I suppose the fruit on my quince isn't a sign of good health... time to get cutting ![]() |
