Twsting Trunks

I am VERY new to bonsai, but I'm trying to get as knowledgable as I can so that down the road my trees will be in better shape. Here's my question. Is there anything I can do to a seedling to evoke a twisting trunk, or is this something that just comes naturally, or maybe firther down the road?

You can attach your seedling to stick a various place in order to make a shape to the trunk.

Here is an inspiration :

LOst,
This is one of the main things we do to develop bonsai. There are several ways to get good twists. Judicious pruning, heavy wire and bend, and staking are three good ones. Read read Read!

I mean twisted, like a twizzler, not curved like an "S"

edit: and with only a single trunk too

Some trees do this naturally, like certain pomegranate and willow. In other trees, you can create the effect artificially by binding and twisting multiple trees and waiting for the trunks to fuse together, kind of like those grotesque ficus plantings at the home centers. You can also carve twists into the deadwood part of the trunk.

I don't know if you can take a single trunk, wire the heck out of it, and twirl it to for a twist. Sounds risky.

Good luck.

thats a very good question. The only way i can think of doin it is takin a seedling with good branching, anchor it, and using wire attatched to one of the branches slowly twist the top of the seedling around over the course of a year or so. I have no idea weather or not that would work, but its the only way i can imagine forming a twisted trunk. I think I'll give it a try if i can dig up a maple seedling somewhere.
Good luck,
Tom

Tom,
I guess it's worth a try, but it seems that as the tree gets older, the twist would disappear. Kind of like a wound healing over. I guess you can continue twisting it year after year as the tree grows.

thanks so much! Just knowing that there really isn't any specific "established" way makes me feel much better. I think I may try it. I dug some young maple samples up the other day, maybe I'll try it on those.
