twin trunks

Hi everyone,

I am quite new to bonsai. In a book I have it has twin trunk as a bonsai style. Is this something I can achieve or will I need to buy one? If I can achieve it, how?
Many thanks

Re: twin trunks

Blossom,
the secondary trunk should grow from the main one near it's base (as near as possible). You can create it by selecting a branch which is in the desired position and bend it up to make him become a new trunk. If it doesn't have any lower branch, it will be more difficult. You will have to induce bud back and pray to grow a new bud near the tree's base. It really depends on the species, because there are species really hard to bud back on the old wood. And start the new trunk from a new bud. It may take time.
The second trunk should be smaller in diameter than the main one and it's apex should be lower too. Wire them slightly foward of the oder (not so far from the other) and avoid branches wich cross the other trunk.
Best wishes,

Joćo Felipe Kudo

Re: twin trunks

Here is a link to a few twin trunk bonsai in the gallery. Some better than others. A successful twin trunk bonsai may give the impression of an adult and child with the more mature tree providing "protection " to the younger trunk.

Here's some more twin trunk trees from the newer museum area

In addition to the very good advice Joao_Felipe provided,
twin trunk bonsai can also be developed from two separate trees of the same species. _Ideally, one would be a cutting so that its leaf and branch character would be identical to the "parent" tree.
