:
![]() I got this little bonsai kit for my birthday, the little kits that come in a small box with seeds, and I have had the plant for a month now and there is a little twig sticking out, but I am not sure how long before the little twig looks more like a mini tree? ![]() Also what does 100% bonsai soil look like ![]() thank you! |

Re: trying to find out ^^
Growing bonsai from seed requires a lot of patience, but it can be very satisfying to look back in several years and say, "I did that!"
It might be a good idea to take a visit to the garden center and find some 1 or 3 gallon juniper material that you can experiment with in the meantime. Growing a plant from seed will give you full control, but if you aren't familiar with the principles of bonsai, you can't direct its growth in the best way. Unless you are very familiar with seedlings, it would be best to let that plant grow for the first year without transplanting or worrying about bonsai soil just yet. If you feel comfortable, you could prick it out and cut a good portion of the downward growing tap root off to help develop some side branching and replant it. If you have several seedlings, why don't you go ahead and do that with half of them. In the meantime, think about that trip to the Garden or Nursery center, and take a look at some of the articles in bonsaiTALK Links under BEGINNERS and TECHNIQUES->PROPAGATION->SEED Regards, Matt

Re: trying to find out ^^
Hey!
I would pick up some books and start reading. And get on the net and find as many articles as you can. I'll tell you what I did- I printed every article I could find, and organized them into binders. So far, I have 9 binders full! Also feel free to stop by my website. It is for beginners, by beginners. There are some articles there too! www.geocities.com/jacksbonsai Capt. Jack |

Re: trying to find out ^^
It depends on the tree, but i always use Akadama/Kiriyu and 100% kanuma for Azalea's.
