To Trim or Not to Trim

I have sevral seedling that I have planted directly into the ground to encourage faster growth. SHould I just let them grow wild, or should I start shaping them while they are in the ground? Would this effect the rate of growth? Thanks in advance!

Re: To Trim or Not to Trim

If they were mine I would let them go wild a year or two. Besides a little root pruning when nesassary. Letting them grow wild would just be like getting rough nursery stock. You would have plenty of branches to keep and plenty to take off. Gives you a much better way of designing what the tree will eventually look like. Just my .02 cents though.

Entling: Seedlings planted into the ground can very easly grow into a yard tree. If the growth starts to streach out and you geet two or three feet of growth you had better cut back and let it grow again. I do not advise one or two years of untrimed growth this can ruin good bonsai material. I also think that you shuld dig these seedlings up after two years and trim the roots, you can then replant them or use them for bonsai........ripsgreentree

Re: To Trim or Not to Trim

Thanks for the info. I will let them grow for a year or two, but trim them only if they grow too wild or large.
