What are you leaning towards?
You can grow tropical and semitropical plants, but you will need additional lighting to overwinter them indoors.
Temperate climate (most deciduous and conifers) trees need to stay outdoors year round.
IMO they are easier.
You can read about "indoor trees" at Bonsaihunk.
A large listing of outdoor trees can be found at Evergreen Gardenworks in their products section.
I realize you're not in the USA, these links are just for informational purposes.
You also need to know what number corresponds to your Hardiness Zone.
It helps if you include that in your profile.

Big Smile

Hi Revolt, Welcome to the world of miniature. The window sill would have to be outside i would suggest you grow juniper, pine , trees that are hardy to withstand Scottish weather. In which part of Scotland do you live? We came from Fife 23 years ago. Get involved with a bonsai club and stay with this great forum where you will find a wealth of info. Ask any question you want someone will reply. Regards Ash
