Soil for cedar
Does anyone have any suggestions for a soil mixture for Cedar trees. They have just been dug up and potted with straight compost and some aquarium rocks for drainage. I know its primative so could I get a primative answer please?

I guess you're talking about that eastern red cedar you posted. Those are junipers by the way, [juniperus virginiana]. Junipers like a mix that is coarse and drains well without too much water retention. Try 1/3 coarse inorganic particles [like turface, poultry grit, or haydite] 1/3 coarse sand and 1/3 composted pine bark. Sift out the fines. You may need to adjust the amounts a little to suit your local conditions.

Whidn: If you want to encorage growth concider a large container, 15 gallon squat or large growing box. One of the biggest mistakes that I have made is to push material into bonsai containers befor it is ready. Have fun with your trees.

Thanks
Hay thanks guys........I was wondering exactly what kind of tree it really was..Now I am certain. I searched the net and found pix of my trees. I wonder if they are Junipers or Cedars or are Cedars Junipers? hmmm.......well now I have the proper name for them
Oh and I will try that soil mix. Do I do it now or when I put them in a bonsai pot? |

That mix will work for developing trees in nursery pots or grow boxes as well as bonsai pots. When to put it in a bonsai pot depends on your plan for the tree and how big you want the trunk. It's pretty hot now in much of the USA so now would not be a good time to repot, I'd wait till it cools down a bit in early fall.
