Soil And Acid PH Balance

I'd like to know if there are any ways or recipies to raise the PH of soil. I'm trying to get some Irish Moss to take. A site I found on the stuff says that it likes the PH to be about 5.

Sulfur will drop your soil PH level. It's a slow process.
Most garden center will sell this stuff. If you are unsure, just ask an employee what to use to get a more acidic soil.

You want to lower the pH, right, not rais it! Put a spoonful of vinegar (acetic acid) in a gallon of water next time you water. Or use Miracid (Now called "Miracle Gro for Azaleas and Camellias")

Regards,

Matt

Thanks, I thought that I would be able to do something like that.

I don't know. I guess I should bye a soil test kit. The sight I found says that the stuff like high acid content in the soil. I don't know if the regular top soil I have here is higher or lower than 5.

I don't remember. Isn't salt water like PH 9 or something?

I don't understand the question. Ocean seawater is typically slightly basic.

Apparently I need to update my Adobe software. That's the second file today that I was not able to view.

Maybe you're right about the sea water. I thought that it had a relatively high acid content, and that's why boats don't last as long in salt water as they do in fresh water.

I was a bit backwards on the PH thing wasn't I? I need to raise the acid level wich will lower the PH balance of the soil.

The vinegar supplement to the soil is just a quick fix correct? Eventually I will need to mix some sulfur in with my soil for a slow release in order to stabalize the PH balance around 5?

These are shots of my plant beds. I was wondering if anybody could identify the whit stuff. It appears when the soil is dry. If I stir it in to the soil it seems to reappear after a few days.

Any solutions?

Is it purely a cosmetic preference, or is it unhealthy to the plants?

I also included a shot of my Jade I collected from the cove here in La Jolla.
