Re: soil

Hi There Pills,

What type of tree is it?

Most bonsai soils are designed to drain pretty quickly. Therefore they're made up of particles that are larger than you'd see in a typical potting soil. You'll probably see some difference in weight just before and after watering your tree - that's the moisture held in the soil both in the porous components of the soil and between the particles, by capillary action.

Another experiment you can try is to water your bonsai, let it stand for an hour or so and then tip it at 15-20 degrees. You'll be amazed by how much water comes out.

Test your bonsai soil every day with a fingertip just beneath the surface. If you can't feel any moisture there, it may be time to water again!

You can find some more information in the ***TECHNIQUES*** section under repotting.

Regards,

Matt

Re: soil

Adam,
I'm very surprised that your retailer admitted to a December repotting. But this is what is done in order to have a pristine bonsai for Christmas Sales.
I hope yours fares better then most and lives! Keep us informed as to your progress!

Re: soil

Hi... please be more specific on what you mean by.. "more rock than dirt". As was stated above, Bonsai Soil is NOT house plant or garden soil. It is usually made up of several different parts, many of which may appear to be gritty or small pebble-like. Do you mean that the soil appears to have this or do you mean rocks 1/2 to1 inch in size??

Re: soil

it's not large rocks, more like tiny pebbles...

if bonsai soil is different, do i need to start growing a seed in bonsai soil, or will regular plant soil do to start a seed. i planted a hyssop seed like 3 weeks ago and it's starting to sprout.

Re: soil

Hi, you said the soil was "it's not large rocks, more like tiny pebbles... " sounds like a Bonsai soil to me! First I am a novice, NOT an expert. It sounds like the soil your tree is in is fine, although as it has been said the time for the repotting is a little questionable. As for the seeds, they are probably fine in what they are in for now. Bonsai soil is designed to drain quickly and to retain moisture, no the soil can do both. I will leave the experts to explain the details. You may want to check the section of this forum on soils and propergation to help you along.
