soft holly

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a soft touch holly from lowes and I am looking for a little advice. I am wandering the best time to repot it, and also a good soil for it to go in. The card on the tree says it like acid soil so I was wandering what soil to use or combonations of soil. Also would it be better for me to repot and wait another season befor pruning the unwanted branches, or is it safe to do at the same time?

Thanks to anyone who has any advice,

Clint

Hi there,

I'm not really familiar with your area, so I'll let someone else answer the question about when to repot in your climate. What you can do though is research about your soft holly, and then make some decisions going from there.

For a soil, always choose something that is free draining. Use something like Cactus & Palm mix, along with some chicken grit. Chicken grit has absolutely no water retention at all, and I buy it in an 80 pound bag for 11 bucks. If you can't find chicken grit, use small gravel, or something to that effect to aid drainage. You may also use pumice, it's weightless and provides areas of air.

When I repot my trees, I usually wait 1 month (depending on the tree) to do any pruning. The reason being is that when you repot it you are putting it into a shock, and pruning the branches it already has won't do it any good.

For acidic soil, it really depends on what kind of stuff your soil is made up of, and what kind of stuff you put into your soil. For my acidic trees, I use a fertilizer called Osmocote, and that's for Azaleas, and it works great. It does the trees a lot of good. I also know that Sphagnum moss is acidic as well.

You may also buy a soil acidifier. Depending on your type of tree, it may need this acidifier 2-4 times a year to keep the acid in it. It all depends on your tree though.

Good luck!
