Re: I need some advice
I don't have any hickory, but I can't see why you couldn't shape it for bonsai. Carya ovata (Shagbark Hickory)
is in the walnut family. Its rugged bark and yellow autumn color could make an interesting tree in that season. We don't often see walnut as bonsai. You may need to create a larger tree to keep the leaves in scale with the planting. It dislikes soggy soil and shade, tends toward developing a deep taproot. It can take the hickory decades to produce nuts, though. http://www.efn.org/~bsharvy/edible3.html This article says that "young trees in winter have the graceful, sparse look of a bonsai" So why not?? http://people.ne.mediaone.net/brianhughes1/trees/descr-2.htm
