bonsaiTALK Hint: Did you know you can double click any bonsai term on this page for its definition?

Sequoias

Anyone using sequoias as a bonsai subject? I have four seedlings that are six months old and approximately 3-5 inches tall. What do I do next?

do nothing !
seriously, nothing!
watching them grow for a few years would likely be the best thing that you could do.
well, one thing you could do is keep a digital archive of the little ones and their development.
best of luck.

Thanks, bmor - I'm TRULY a beginner here (this is my first project) and I need all the help I can get!

By the way, there's a great article about sequoias in the February issue of Adventure magazine, titled "Quest for the Green Giant".

you'll find that patience is a virtue. the participants here have a wealth of expertise to share so you could dig into old threads while you wait for those little ones to grow up.

I love watching my "little ones" grow - two of them are literally growing before my eyes. Their branches are adding almost 1/4 of an inch of growth every couple of days. It's amazing!

Question: Should I put my seedlings in larger containers as they grow over the next few years or put them in bonsai pots?

Larger containers, or, if your climate permits, the ground until you get to the size you want for bonsai. They'll grow faster than in bonsai pots.

Refer to the thread by Andy Rutledge, called "odd salvage job", and I think you will see why ground growth is your best option, providing that those trees will grow in your area.
