Seed Stratification: Trident Maple

I was told to run them through hot water, then wrap them in a wet(not to wet) paper towel, and slowly move them up the fridge for 90-120 days.

Couple questions

1. Can I put them in the fridge any time of the year? and plant them any time of the year, or do they have to be planted during spring?

2. Do you ever continue to add water in the zip lock bag while it's in the fridge? Do you use a fungicide on the seeds and if so what is it and where do you get it?

thanks so much

Maybe so, but I always stratify under control conditions of the fridge in expectation of better yield. Maybe so, maybe not, but i think so.

As for adding water, if the towel is damp enough and the bag is sealed tight you shouldn't have to.

Frankly, i prefer damp milled sphagnum to the paper towel because the towel is bound to have some acid residue from manufacture, and I don't think it a good idea to leave the seed in contact for that long a period of time.

I have not had problem with damping of of the seed in the fridge, and don't know what I would do if I did. Probably add a little sulfur water (a few drops!) to it and hope it would clear up.

Thanks for the replys! But, should you put them in the fridge during winter? Then plant them early spring? or does it timing not matter w/ seeds and a fridge?

Can I just put them in the fridge right now, and plant them after 90-120 days?
Thanks

Unless you can protect them from the winter cold after they sprout, they will not make it through the winter as young seedlings. If you sow them in Oct/Nov, they won't have enough strength to make it through until spring.

Better to put them into the fridge at the right time to plant them in spring.

You might buy some Brazilian Raintree seeds, they are tropicals and don't need the stratification. And their trunks twist up naturally.

Joanie (who ordered seeds just recently too, and is itching to plant them. Patience, patience.)

2 weeks in the fridge before you sow is ample.

I have grown these trees from seed in that past and have found that they will germinate rather easily. Soak them in warm water for 24-48 hours, 24 will do. Place them in a ziplock bag with damp soil and add a no-damp style of product to it, just to prevent rot. After doing that, take all the air out of the bag and chuck them in the fridge for 30-90 days. Start checking them for growth every other day after the 30, I had so many that started growing in the bag while in the fridge. Try to time it so they germinate as they normally would outside, that way, you can put them directly outside where maples like to live.

By using the fridge instead of the natural (outdoors) way, you can control all of the factors. You will have a steady temperature, you control the moisture, and you probably won't have any pests in your fridge trying to eat your seeds. Hope this helps as well.
