royal poinciana bonsai?

hey all

i have half a dozen royal poinciana seeds, and i was wondering whether anyone has ever seen a bonsai version of it, or if it is even possible to create a bonsai from these seeds. if so, any ideas how to go about it? i know it would take a canny few years, but i got the time

thanks all!

Hi Aesir22,
Royal poinciana is the tree belong to tropical area(it likes humid and hot weather and lot of sunlight). You is in England, so I don't know if it can survive. I really love this tree when it blooms with big red flowers in the summer time. Its leaves are too long for bonsai. I used to plant one in my yard few years ago, but it can not survive after one winter (temp about 45 degree F in my area). Good luck to you. Bonhe

lol thought that wud be the case! but, i have a dozen of the seeds and i need to do something with them, so i might give it a shot anyway. worse can happen, but at least can learn from the experience, and might get lucky! wouold keep it indoors with the fukien tea, warm and humid! will check in progression to see how it goes, even if it ends badly!

cheers all

Yes, it doesn't hurt to give a try. I think you should let it in the green house to get it humid and hot. One of the nurseries in Southern California placed those trees in green house even in the summer time!. Good luck, Bonhe

I've often thought about this tree since they are frequently low spreading trees, or wider than they are tall. I like the look of this type of canopy. I've noticed them many times growing in "soil" that is not much more than pulverized coral rock in the Fla. Keys. Add some very harsh winds and associated additional salts (spray) and over the years you get some fairly contorted specimens as a result. Hence, the interest.

I am reasonably sure they could tolerate any standard procedure for suitable reduction of leaf size. The only draw back for me is that I can't find one to collect!

Nursery stock is readily available but, just not the same...(SIGH).

Cheers,

Thanks for the kind offer but, I'm afraid one that small might not pull through in my greenhouse while I'm away.

Cheers,

Indoors! ;)

I'm actually growing a few of those right now, indoors under 3 4' fluorescent fixtures(2*40watt bulbs each, full spectrum variety). They seem to be doing quite well, started from seed almost a year ago. They are in front of a window as well for supplemental daylight. Room is kept at about 60-80deg F, and 50-80% humidity.
