Rootbound Maples

Hi All,
I just got some trident maple seedlings on eBay. They apear pretty healthy, but are quite rootbound. They're in these little nursery containers with open bottoms except for a narrow cross of plastic. I hadn't planned on doing anything with them till spring, but there are roots oozing out of every possible orifice.... some of the roots coming out of the bottom are 3 or 4 inches long. I feel I should do something with them right away, but am unsure just what.
Should I just lift them out and put the intact rootball into a bigger pot?
Should I trim the roots at all or break up the rootball?
Should I wait until they drop thier leaves.
Thanks for any advice.
Best,
Kevin

Wait! You can cut off the roots outside the container if they bother you. You're saying they appear healthy, so don't worry about it until spring.

Regards,

Matt

Thanks Matt,
I haven't done anything rash...
At least I think they're healthy. (I can post pics tomorrow if you think it’ll help) Some of the leaves are yellow, but I figured that was just seasonal. I planned on putting them (in pot) in the ground, in a cold frame for the winter. Maybe I should put ‘em in the ground before I had planned (late Nov.) as the pots they’re in, don’t seem to have much soil in them, it’s mostly roots.
Thanks again,
Kevin
