Re: rock bonsai

If you want to grow a tree in a depression in the stone, you could start the seeds in some soil there. If you wish to have the tree "on" the stone, then I would start the seeds in a pot. When the seedling is about 5 inches tall I would prune back for shape and let the tree grow for one season. Next season I would transfer to a deep pot to let the roots grow long. The next spring the tree could be attached to the rock for further styling. This is simplified and is based on the tree having exceptional growth and being in good health. There are also trees which lend themselves to growing on rocks better than others. Trident maple, most junipers, some elms, pines and spruce will all look natural and adapt well to life on a stone. There are numerous books that depict plants on stones and give full documentation as to how to create them. I am sure that someone here will come up with some web pages that have instruction as well. Good luck, Bonsaial

Re: rock bonsai

i learned this from the forum:

take two pots, cut the bottom out of one and put it on the top of the other, fill the bottom up with soil, and the top with sand, the roots will grow past the sand to get to the soil.
