Repotting my sageretia

Is it safe to do so yet, i know its only February and I'm in england(zone 8/9) but it needs doing soon I think, and I want to get it out of the bonsai pot its in and put it into a flower pot to allow for some growth.
Does this species respond to hard pruning well, as all I'm getting is dead stubs when I cut older wood,(soft wood cuts fine, nice new growth to pinch back) Could this be because it needs a repot too?
Also I want to correct those roots, I was thinking of planting it deeper than normal, scoring the root base that I want to improve, applying rooting hormone, then covering with compost, or should I do that another time?
Thanks guys
Larry

Hi Larry

You originally posted this in the FAQ, which is usually a place people woudl go to for frequently asked questions.

If it isn't growing, it is most likely not getting enough light or perhaps staying too wet. How quickly does it drain when you water?

Regards,

Matt

Thanks Matt,
Oh its growing like wildfire when it gets going! I water every day because it drains away straight away,(just fed with miracle gro too, first time in a while tho i fed regularly in summer) the soil its in is a god mix I think, very well drained, but I do feel it needs a repot as it won't backbud, which I have learned is strange for this species.

Thumbs up

Hi Larry,
I like your sag.. has good movement in the trunk and taper also..
Matt's suggestion about light is right on..
I don't hard prune mine until I can get them out of the greenhouse and into full sun for atleast a few hours a day. If this were mine I'd wait til a week or two before you put it outside for the summer.. repot and wait until you see vigorous growth return. From the photo it doesn't look as though there is much to prune.. I'd let it grow until the root thingy is corrected then continue on the branching, etc..

peace,
tom stoute
