Quick Question About Height

Hello,

Just a quick question regarding the height of a new bonsai.

I went to a local nursery and picked up wonderful "Tsuga Mertensiana" Larch.

The tree itself is quite young (not too sure, maybe about 2-3 years). The overall height of the tree is about 12" (if you bend the leading branch upwards).

I guess my question mainly is...

Is this the final height of the tree, or is it possible to always advance the height of the tree?

I do realize if I put it in the ground for a couple of years it'll grow...but, i don't have the room for that so I'll have to keep it in a pot for the life of the tree.

The base trunk thickness is about 1/2" and i'd also like to thicken it up.

Will the trunk thicken in the pot relatively quickly...3-4 years? Or will it only thicken if placed in the ground?

I'll try to post a pic of the tree soon so that I can bounce some ideas.

Thanks, and I hope to hear from yall soon!

Photos always help.

It won't thicken much in a bonsai pot relative to the growth you'd see in the ground or even a training box, but it will grow some.

It has the potential to be any height you want - or if you put it in the ground, to grow into a large landscape tree. In the container, its height will progress more slowly, but gaining height should not be a problem.

Regards,

Matt

Hello,

Tsuga Mertensiana is a mountain hemlock, not a larch. This species is a very slow grower, so even in the ground you're not going to get really rapid increases in girth.

Nonetheless, it is a lovely bonsai species well suited to growing in the Pacific Northwest - enjoy!

Best regards,
Carl
