purple starflower help

I have a purple starflower that's in trouble. I had to leave a while back on short notice and the tree dried out badly. I was able to get back and pour the water to the thing and it looked like the leaves were going to make a comeback. However, only a few hardened off while the others fell so I'm back to worrying about this tree. Right now, the tree is sitting inside (the nursery I bought if from said it was a fairly tender tree) under flourescent lights. Days here are mid 60's and nights are 40's. Any suggestions? If it will help, I'll try to post a picture.

Re: purple starflower help

Doc,
Is that the grewia caffra, lavender starflower you speak of, Sir. If so they are very hardy and should recover. I've had several that missed getting watered in the summer and stressed real bad. They dropped about half the leaves and then came back like gangbusters.
Hang in there with it, as long as it has some leaves and has some green in the cambium layer there is hope!

Re: purple starflower help

yeah, that's the one. I can't spell worth a darn so I figured I'd best go with purple. Thanks for the info, I'll set the plant back outside and let it come back.

Re: purple starflower help

I tried too, earlier The best my addled brain could come up with was grewelia, which turns out to be a plant, just not the right one.

I think the lavender-purple-whatsis is frost sensitive. We brought ours in at night, but maybe that's G. occidentalis and not G. caffra?

I couldn't find the difference, but here's a datasheet on [i:b7d0642a88]Grewia occidentalis[/i:b7d0642a88]

http://www.desert-tropicals.com/Plants/Tiliaceae/Grewia_occidentalis.html

ahh.. the data sheet says they're the same plant. But there's only supposed to be one legal latin name. I wonder which is the current favorite?

Grewvy,

Matt

Yeah, I second Al's comment. Have you tried propagating this tree?

Doc,
Yes I have, very easy! Very hardy tree under used as bonsai. Tons of short lived flowers all summer long. Fast grower and a fibrous root system easily containerized!
But you know that, you started all this!!!
