John, the reason I twist mine was that after a very hard pruning on Pinezilla's branches I started getting new buds at the bases of the older needles. If I were to have just pulled them(the older needles) off they would've taken the new buds that were forming. Even the twisting of one at a time motion took a few new buds in the process. As far as adventatious buds popping out closer to the trunk not many popped on PZ. But I know I am still a long ways away on this particular pine. Sorry that I did not explain this earlier. And I'll put a disclaimer with this....Do Not Attempt This on Your Own Tree. Remember I'm a noob

Im right in the middle. The modern Japanese Masters and their progeny mostly pull. But they pull at the right time of the year. Like Kc said timing and health is important.
If you are trying to clean up a tree now you are out of season and liable to end up with many new buds in your hands along with your third year needles. So I think pull in late fall clean up, cut any other time. There you go to furthur convolute the bp anecdotal pool of knowledge...

Rock,
I have been pulling needles on JBP all day(today)- and breaking candles. In June/July we will cut the new candles and then pull needles to balance growth, I will cut needles in half to stimulate back budding on trees after digging from the field, but then always pull the needles on JBP that are in developmeny. Cheers, John (Edit: Actually, Ya'll can do whatever you like with your JBPs. John)
