Pictures...you need'um

Hi all....I have been putting away my trees for the winter, noticing the growth and changes another growing season has produced. I realize now that I am guilty of an error of omission. Nothing terminal, but something that can not be reversed. I have no pictures of my trees from the beginning of this season or even before they went into their wintering location. I can now see the benefit of having said pictures. I promise myself this will not happen again. I will take pictures of all my trees, even the cuttings, at least every three months.
To be able to see how much tree x has progressed, and to what degree the projections I had for it have been achieved. Let my mistake not be yours!!!

Re: Pictures...you need'um

Greetings,

Jay's point is a great one. I wanted to let folks know that the shohin pictures that are currently appearing in the upper left window were taken with a nikon 950 digital camera about 3 years ago. Indeed, most all of the bonsai photos in the TreeBay gallery were.

Cameras like it (mine's not for sale now) currently sell used on ebay for somewhere in the vicinity of $325 to $400. I even saw one with a "5 year warranty" that went for $482. The 950 can be considered obsolete now, because there are cameras with higher resolution and quicker shot-to-shot time, but for this kind of work, it's nearly perfect, although I'm sure it's replacement the 995 would be even better.

For photography, lighting is everything, but I just wanted folks to know that these cameras are very capable of excellent results.

Regards,

Matt

Re: Pictures...you need'um

Matt et al... I had an old Fuji DX-10 digital camera; it was .85 mega-pixel not even one. It did an OK job on small size pixs. I recently upgraded to a Canon A20, big difference. It is 2.11 mega-pixel. I can take and have printed large pictures with this camera. I think that anything larger than 2 mega-pixel is not worth the extra cost. The A20 ran me $406.00 new. Now anyone getting into digital for the first time should know that you probable will want to get a bigger memory card (the equivalent of the film) so you can hold more pictures. You may also decide to get a card reader for the 'puter so not to keep the camera on while uploading and to get quicker uploads. Both of these extras will run $30-$80 each. You will need them for any digital camera you get.

Then very soon you discover you have taken so many pictures that you need a larger hard drive, a CD-ROM burner, and a bigger screen to appreciate the photos! *

Then you just might find yourself shopping for a photo-quality printer. *:

They should give these cameras away - They'd make it up on accessories!!! *

I don't know. I think if I started keeping photo records of the changes in my trees, it would loose the hobby interest and become more of a chore. At this point, I've lost interest in a lot of hobbies that became chores.

Re: Pictures...you need'um

I must disagree. It is little work to 3 or 4 times a year take a few pixs. You can even put multiple trees in one picture. To be able to see the growth and improvement in the trees from year to year I think would be woth the effort involved.

Mr Jay,
I want to agree with you, but in fact end up with doc on this one. One has to have priorities. In my 11 years with bonsai I have said I need to take photos a 100 times but haven't. So maybe I really dont care about it that much. Is that so wrong...

Re: Pictures...you need'um

Hi all.....I guess it is, like most things, a personal choice. I regret not being able to see how much change ( I hope improvement) has occured in my trees. For example, I have a Blue Moss Cypress purchased at a local garden center. It was 3 ft high and Xmas tree shaped. At the begining of the summer I shaped this tree and trimmed it, giving it a new leader. It is now about 2 ft tall and starting to look good. I wish I could see what I started with. But thats just me I guess!
