Over Taxing Roots

What happens when roots are over taxed?

For example: An air layer is removed and the foilage is not removed (or not enough).

What are the consequences of the roots being over taxed by moisture loss?

It depends on the extent of the imbalance. If it's minor, it slows growth. If it's major, there are a couple possibilities:

If it's a deciduous tree, all foliage wilts. That may trigger a rebudding of foliage in balance with the available roots.

For a conifer, it would probably turn brown and die.

Regards,

Matt

Not really - although deciduous trees respond to foliage damage more readily than conifers, they may not recover from stress either. It depends on the degree of stress.

When you repot a deciduous plant, it typically has no foliage, so the demand on the root system is minimal. There is time for feeder roots to develop as budding progresses to shoot growth.

I'm not sure if I understand the point behind the question, so I may not be answering it very well. In generalk, you don't want to separate layers in late summer unless it's unavoidable.
Regards,

Matt

yea, I've removed most of the leaves and put it under shade covering.

It's because I have this book by Peter chan and in the book he says to remove it before the winter comes so that the roots will be well established.

However, I don't see why one shouldn't remove it during late summer?

I'm not trying to be ignorant, but I would however like to know the reason for it.

The answer to your question was posted by Jake in the other thread: "The new roots are going to have to support a fairly large foliage mass when the layer is separated."

The foliage loads the roots, and separating in late summer cuts off supply when demand is near peak.

Chan's right, but there is a season between late summer and winter... at least there is supposed to be!

Regards,

Matt
