Office Life Stunts Juniper? And Bald Cyp. Question

Hey, greetings Bonsai forum type people

Anyway, I have had a bonsai for about 2 years or so now, and have been concerned about it's growth. At first when I got it as a 2 year old it was a small size - locked away and not cared much for. Once I got it home to put in fresh air and sunlight however, my little Juniper shot up like a rocket - figuratively speaking. I had new growth alll over the place, and it was good.

Then about 3 months later I moved into a office - one of the nicer buildings in downtown Tulsa - but - they have totally sealed windows and a hightech air filtering system. The window's were tinted - and my tree just stopped growing. After about 6 months or so being in there - we moved offices - now I've got a office where it doesn't get direct sun anytime but in the morning - and the window's aren't tinted - but it still has to deal with filtered air.

Now - one reason I was really concerned is that I trimmed it and alot of the parts that died back - didn't cause any new growth. I had prunned it a bit a couple of months after I first got it - and where I cut it stopped growing, and grew other places - normal. But now - I went back about 3 months post move into a office - and prunned it. No new growth. Anywhere.

--

I'm a bit of a newb I would guess - because it occurs to me that this mainly happend over the fall winter period - and perhaps it just wasn't down for new growth then. But I'm concerned that it wasn't it - and want to keep my little tree healthy! So - suggestions to move it out, or do something fertilzer wise or whatever - is appreciated

--

Bald Cypress - or how ever you spell that hehe. Quick question - I just got about 4 little new trees that I wanted to bonsai blah blah blah. I was going to consult my 'oh to grow inside bonsai trees' that also has the bonsai process lined out in it - it's been a while and I've forgotten how to bonsai hah - but like - is this a good tree to bonsai? I've been a real bad person - only wanting to deal with evergreen tree's to bonsai that way I have growth year round heh - so these new free tree's I picked up at a enviromental convention are a bit foriegn to me. Sure I can read up on the tree overall online somewhere I'm sure - but as for anything else bonsai related - I know not. This isn't a evergreen I'm pretty sure - so now I'll have to buckle down and learn how to treat seasonal tree's more Hah. Any info would be
appreciated!

If any of this info has been posted else where and I just didn't find it or see it - I appologize heh, I know how hard it can be to keep forums under control - I thank you for your help though.

Both of these trees are outdoor trees. They won't live long in an office environment. It may already be too late for the juniper. No new growth at this time of year is a bad sign. I would put all these trees outside in a shady spot and keep them watered when needed. When and if they start putting on new growth start giving them a few hours of morning sun and see how they progress. Bald Cypress make nice bonsai but they need to be grown in the ground or very large pot to add thickness and taper to the trunk. After that they are trunk chopped and a new apex grown and eventually put in a bonsai pot. For right now though just concentrate on getting your trees healthy.

Ditto on Tony's comments. Unless you can set up proper growing conditions your trees will probably fade away from lack of sunlight, humidity, etc.

Your best bet is to get a tropical species that does well indoors or rotate trees through for a week or so but no more, returning them to their outdoor location to recover.

Although you are expecting your bald cypress to be vergreen all year, you've acquired one of the few "deciduous conifers" - it will drop it's foliage in the winter...

for some pic's and training advice try cajunbonsai.com and gnobs.org

For general advice there's other areas of this site,

evergreengardenworks.com

And the IBC Gallery

http://www.internetbonsaiclub.org/a...ernetbonsaiclub

Their training is not all that different than deciduous trees. You could reduce one's height and rootball enough to get it into an oversized pot and begin training it while overpotting the others and letting them grow larger to give you trees over varying heights. These, again are outdoor trees...

Good Luck,

Ahh responses! I've got to get my account to email me heh. Anyway - thanks for the advice and info guys - I'll check the last website ref'ed in a bit, and skimmed the rest already.

As for actual advice yea - I've got visual aid's now!

My gallery and then this image I just snapped witha pooor webcam Anyway - the gallery image is from last year! Or so? Okay, no it was on 2/20/03 heh. But still - no new growth from what I can tell...

I figure it's time to take the guy home and let it recoperate if I truly cannot have him in the office

I appreciate all the help though - I've been planning on purchasing some bonsai's from a local nurs. soon to start the 'rotation' out - but I want to make sure I've got down THIS bonsai and all before I move on.

Well humidity might have gotten me a bit, but I think I figured it out - It's 4+ yr's old and NEEDS TO BE REPOTTED!

-_-

I cannot believe it took me re-reading my indoor bonsai book to realize this. I suxor. Anyway - long story short, I think I'll be able to get it even happier once I get it repotted.

Btw - I've got a 12 yr old JP Juniper AND that 4yr old to take care of, and my Bald Cyp. has been growing like I didn't cut it in half  - so I'm doing decent there. Also I have been rotating out week by week as mentioned to me - so thanks for the help!

Take the time to learn how to style your bonsai as well, that juniper is getting shaggy, and has no clear direction. There is enough discussion here to get you started on styling, and as the trees recover, get some closeup pictures, and ask the advice of the locals here.

Luckily I think both are heathly now, but the younger one is just stunted, with the need to be re-potted. Well the big one - the 12 yr old - I just recieved, and don't really see HOW I could shape it differently than it already is... It's kinda a odd duck - it's got a 80$ growth and size but a 30$ trim imo

Anyway - yea I'll have to get in on that thing when I get the chance, and won't think I'll kill it

As for the 4yr old, it's got a good shape imo, but I left about 25% un-trimmed on the top left - and yea, could use a bit of a cut now too. I need to repot it first though! Ahh! >_<
