Nursery stock for gonsai

I just picked up a couple of plants from a nursey. Both clearly have been in their pots a long time and are off to a good start as bonsai. What's the first step in handling these? Once they've aclimatized to my yard should they be repotted to give them some fresh soil in the same pot? They are both quite rootbound. All I've done so far is prune a bit of dead wood.

Re: Nursery stock for bonsai

Good point:

1) The mysterious Sinojackia xylocarpa, nobody seems to know much about this. It's got great roots (nebari?) and a two inch main trunk tapering to 1/2" over 2 feet. It has a big ugly shoot growing out to the side about 6 inches up which then turns straight up 4 feet. I suspect this is what caused the trunk to fatten up so much. It had been there so long that it took a large chunk of the nursery when I picked up the pot.

2) Wisteria floribunda. Typical nursery stock but has a nice 1 1/4 trunk that divides to two large 3/4" trunks about 6" up. No visible graft I can find. Pot bound. Just starting to leaf out.

So far I'm just letting them get aclimated to my yard. San Francisco, plenty of morning sun, dappled shade in the late afternoon, days 60-70, cool nights. I'll try getting some pics.
